    President, Global Finance Research Institute / Author, [Currency Wars] Series

    Song Hongbing was born in 1968 in Sichuan and graduated in 1990 from Northeastern University. He then moved to United States of America for further education majoring in information technology and education, and obtained master¡¯s degree in American University. Following his education, he worked in U.S. media and lobbying company, medical industry, telecommunications, information security, the federal government and well-known financial institutions. Since 2002, he worked as a senior consultant in the nation¡¯s biggest non-bank financial institutions, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, and mainly engaged in real estate loan automatic inspection system design, tax calculation and analysis of financial derivatives and MBS (asset-backed bonds) risk assessment. He also worked as chief international financial strategist in Hongyuan Securities, the General Manager of Structured Finance. In 2009, Song Hongbing established Global Finance Research Institute and served as the president.     Connie Bolland is the founder and Chief Economist of Economic Research Analysis Ltd (ERA) a boutique research firm specializing in analyzing and advising clients on Asian economic trends and outlook, especially China¡¯s, and their implications to investment and business strategies. She also leads and conducts customized research studies for clients. Prior to this, she spent three years with the Economist Group as the regional economist of its Economist Corporate Network, advising C-levels executives of Fortune 500 types of multinationals on regional macro developments and outlooks and leading and conducting research studies for these clients. This followed her ten years of work experience with global investment banks, including Lehman Brothers in Tokyo, where she was head of non-Japan economic research, and HSBC Asset Management in Hong Kong, as its senior economist and head of Asian research respectively. Connie has served as a part-time member of the Central Policy Unit of the Hong Kong government, advising the Hong Kong governor prior to the 1997 transition, then the HKSAR¡¯s Chief Executive, on policy matters and economic and financial issues.   • Kashiwabara, Chie

    Director, Institute of Developing Economies (IDE-JETRO), Financial and Fiscal Policies Studies Group

    Kashiwabara Chie received her bachelors degree from International Christian University and gained four years of experience in the Japanese banking sector of Fuji Bank. Following this, she then obtained M.A in international public administration and economics from the same university and joined IDE-JETRO in 1996. Since then, she has conducted a series of researches and analyses on the IMF/World Bank-led international financial architecture and development finance, the economic and financial-sector development in the Philippines, sequencing and promoting the capital markets in developing countries, etc. From 2001 to 2003, she was seconded from IDE to the Asian Development Bank as Economist in Southeast Asia Department, where she was in charge of the technical assistances and loans to the Philippines. At present, she leads a team of researchers as a director of IDE-JETRO Financial and Fiscal Policies Studies Group, Development Studies Center and her major research areas are the regional financial cooperation framework in Asia, the changes in corporate financing and bank lending/asset management behavior in the post-Asian financial crisis period, financial sector development and related issues in the Philippines. Along with her research, she lectures in various universities, including Yokohama City University and Seijo University.
  • Edward Leung

    Director of Research, Hong Kong Trade Development Council

    Edward Leung graduated from the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 1974, majoring in Economics. He continued his study at the same university and was awarded the M. Phil. Degree in 1977. Following this, he was awarded the L.L.B. Degree from the University of London, and was admitted as a Barrister-at-Law by Gray's Inn of England and also in Hong Kong and Canberra.     Country Head, Fidelity Worldwide Investment Korea

    Michael Reed is Country Head for Fidelity Worldwide Investment in Korea. He oversees Fidelity's presence, strategy and new development plans relating to Fidelity's business in Korea for both the retail and institutional channels. Michael joined Fidelity from Standard Life Investments (Asia) Limited, a subsidiary of one of Europe's major investment houses, where he held the position of Chief Executive Officer for four years. Michael was responsible for the firm's operations in Hong Kong, China, Taiwan, Australia and Korea. He was also a SICAV Board Director and a Director for Indian funds. Prior to Standard Life Investments (Asia) Limited, Michael worked with Franklin Templeton Investments in Asia where he held several senior management positions, including Representative Director and Country Head for their Korean operations. In particular, he led the successful establishment of the first foreign-owned, independent asset management in Korea.   • Min, Sangkee

    Emeritus Professor, Seoul National University Business School

    Dr. Min, Sangkee is a Emeritus Professor of International Finance at Seoul National University. Dr. Min has been a leading scholar in the field of finance since he returned home with Ph.D. from the University of Michigan in 1976. He had been presidents of a few scholarly associations including Korean Association of Money and Finance and Korean Association of Futures and Option. Over the years he also served in various managerial positions for the University: Dean of Planning and Coordination, Dean of International Studies and Dean of Graduate School. From 1980s, professor Min has been actively involved in the formulation of government policies. For 16 years he had been a member of ¡°Committee for Development of Financial Industry¡± at the Ministry of Finance. He was the president of the Committee for the last 3 years ending 2004. Between 1996 and 1997, he served as a commissioner of the Securities Exchange Commission. In 2007, he founded and has been the president of Seoul Investment Banking Forum. Membership of the forum includes presidents of leading banks and securities houses, presidents of scholarly and research associations of finance, presidents of law and accounting firms. Professor Min had served as Chairman of the Public Funds Oversight Committee. In response to the global financial crisis, government restarted the Public Funds Oversight Committee in August 2009. The committee is charged of provision of government funds to troubled financial institutions, relief of toxic assets and privatization of the previously nationalized firms.

    Deputy Director General, Bank of Korea Economic Research Institute

    Kyuil Chung received his Ph.D. in UC Davis, California, U.S.A. His main specialties are monetary economics, international macroeconomics, and econometrics. He is currently Deputy Director General of the Economic Research Institute, Bank of Korea. He previously served as the head of the monetary studies team and international economic studies team at the Institute. He has written and presented numerous papers in international journals and conferences. Some examples include ¡°Capital inflows and policy responses: lessons from Korea¡¯s experience, (Ch. 7, The Great Recession: lessons for central bankers, MIT press, 2013),¡± ¡°Mitigating systemic spillovers from currency hedging (with Hyun Song Shin and Hail Park, NIER, July 2012), ¡°Household debt, the savings rate and monetary policy: the Korean experience (BIS Papers No 46, 2009),¡± etc. His current research interests lie in the area of policy measures such as foreign exchange, monetary and macroprudential policy to combat excessive volatility of capital flows, monetary policy and financial stability, and reform of the international monetary system.

    Joris Dierckx is the Country Head of Korea for BNP Paribas where he works closely with the senior management team in Seoul. Prior to his current position Joris was Country Head for BNP Paribas in Greece. He also has a distinguished career in Asia beginning in 2001 at Fortis Bank (later acquired by BNP Paribas), where he held several management posts in Singapore and Tokyo, focused primarily on export and project finance.     Professor Sohn, Wook specializes in the study of financial intermediaries, monetary policy and financial markets. His work has appeared in such journals as the Journal of Banking and Finance, Applied Economics, Applied Financial Economics, Economics Letters, and Global Economic Review. He received the Best Paper Awards from Korea Finance Association and Korea America Finance Association in 2010 and 2011. He taught at Seoul National University, KAIST and Yonsei University business schools, and has been teaching at KDI School since 2005. He worked for the Office of Bank Supervision (currently Financial Supervisory Service) for four years and the Bank of Korea, the nation¡¯s central bank, for six years as an economist and senior economist. He also worked for the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System while a graduate student.
    In addition to his roles as a researcher and professor, Sohn is or was a member of advisory committees for the Korea Housing Finance Corporation, Financial Supervisory Service, Bond Market Stabilization Fund and Task Force for G20 Summit Meetings. Sohn earned a bachelor¡¯s degree in economics from Seoul National University in 1989, and a master¡¯s degree in 1999 and a PhD in 2003 in economics from Columbia University.

  • Olfa Maalaoui

    Assistant Professor of KAIST Business School

    Olfa Maalaoui Chun obtained her PhD in Finance from HEC Montreal, University of Montreal, Canada. She is currently an assistant professor at the Graduate School of Finance, Korea Advanced institute of Science and Technology (KAIST). She is working in areas related primarily to credit risk, risk management, derivatives and empirical quantitative analysis. She has presented her research on the financial markets at numerous seminars and international conferences. Her article titled "Detecting regimes in credit spreads" is forthcoming at the Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, a top journal in finance. At KAIST she is teaching credit risk management in the Finance MBA program and Options and Futures in the Techno MBA program. She is also a visiting scholar during the summers at the Business School of the University of Southern California."
  • Choi, Gongpil

    Senior Advisor, Korea Institute of Finance

    Dr. Gongpil Choi has worked as the CSO, CRO, and senior advisor at the Woori Financial Group (NYSE:WF) from 2008-2009. He served as a National Intelligence Officer (Economics) for the National Intelligence Service from 2007-2008. His prior experience includes positions as a senior advisor and economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, Banking Supervision and Regulation, International Supervision from 2005-2006. He also had a series of visiting scholar appointments at UC Berkeley, UC San Diego, and the Santa Fe Institute from 2000-2001. Before joining the Korea Institute of Finance (KIF), where he has served for over 15 years since 1994, he worked for Daewoo Research Institute and the Korea Chamber of Commerce. He graduated from the University of Virginia with a Ph.D. in Economics. He specializes in open macro policy analyses with extensive quantitative techniques. Under the support of the World Bank, he developed the official prototype for an EWS for currency crises in the wake of the 1997 currency crisis. He is the recipient of the Maekyoung Economist Award for his work on the implications of the capital adequacy of Korean banks. He currently serves as a Senior Advisor at the Korea Institute of Finance.
  • Choi, Ji Young

    Director of Financial Cooperation Division, Ministry of Strategy and Finance

    Mr. Choi Ji Young joined the Ministry of Strategy and Finance, Korea (KMOSF) in 1994. He started off his career as deputy director in Treasury and then in International Finance Bureau where he was in charge of public fund management and capital account management, respectively. Later, he assumed the position of director of Real Estate Policy Division in Policy Coordination Bureau. In 2008, he joined the World Bank and served as senior economist specializing in the African region before he moved back to KMOSF in 2011, as director responsible for International Monetary System (IMS). Currently, as director of Financial Cooperation Division, he is overseeing ASEAN+3 financial cooperation as well as bilateral cooperation. He graduated from Korea University as a business major, and earned his PhD in economics at the University of Missouri-Columbia in 2005.
  • An, Yu Hua

    Research Fellow, Korea Capital Market Institute International Finance

    An Yu Hua is currently a senior research fellow at Korea Capital Market Institute (KCMI) and is also active as a chief editor of the ¡®China Financial Market Focus¡¯. Previously, she was a professor at Yanbian University in China, and she continues teaching till now as a visiting professor at Korea University Business School and Chung-ang University. Her research is focused on corporate finance, including corporate governance, M&A, and IPOs and she has published several articles and book ¡°International Trade Act¡±, based on her research area. During her time in China, she collaborated with the Jilin Province Ministry of Education on a Local Economy Design Project, and she was also recruited as a member of the Knowledge Economy Development Research Project for the city of Yanji. Following the introduction of Capital Market Act in Korea, she has worked on various project related to revision of the Money Laundering Act. At present, she is of Korea Institute of Financial Investment and holds classes and seminars. An Yu Hua graduated from Korea University Business School and has received PhD from the same university.
  • Kim, Woochan

    Associate Professor, Korea University Business School

    Dr. Kim is an Associate Professor of Finance at Korea University Business School (KUBS). Before joining KUBS, Dr. Kim was a professor at the KDI School of Public Policy and Management (2000.6 – 2012.3) and also worked at the Korean government (serving four years at the Ministry of Finance and Economy), where he held positions in the policy areas of foreign exchange and international financial institutions (IFI). Dr. Kim also holds a number of responsibilities outside the school. He serves as the Director of Economic Reform Research Institute (ERRI), a private research institute established in 2009 that studies economic reform issues in Korea. Dr. Kim also held a number of advisory positions at the Korea National Pension Fund, including the Proxy Voting Advisory Committee and the Performance Evaluation and Compensation Advisory Committee. Dr. Kim holds a B.A. degree in International Economics from Seoul National University and a Ph.D. degree in Public Policy from Harvard University. Dr. Kim passed the High Civil Service Examination (Finance and Economy Section) in 1990, selected as the New Generation Leader 100 (Munhaw Ilbo) in 2000, won the Maekyung Economist Award in 2007 (Maeil Business News Paper), and the Chungram Award (The Korean Economic Association) in 2012.
